I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If there is water still leaking, turn off the tap to the appliance or fixture if possible, or go immediately to the main water shutoff valve for your property. If you’re unable to find the tap to turn off, then you can try turning on all the cold taps inside and outside the house to depressurise the system and minimise the leak.

Once that is done, give us a ring, no matter what the day or time is. We’ll be there rapidly to fix the leak.

In the meantime, begin wiping up any water, position a container to catch drips, and remove significant items from the area. If the house water is turned off, then also switch off the heating for the hot water.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
