I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is leaking, turn the water off at the nearest location and then at the mains tap outside. If you cannot find the main isolation valve or a tap to the fixture, then turn on all the cold taps inside and out to help depressurise the system and reduce the leak.

Once that is sorted, give our plumber a call, whatever the day or time is. We’ll be with you shortly to fix the leak.

While you are waiting, clear away any important items from the area, and clean up any water or put a container to catch the drips. If you’ve turned the mains water off, switch off the hot water heating as well.
