I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If there is still water leaking, turn off the tap to the appliance or fixture if possible, or go straight to the main water shutoff valve for your home. If you are unable to locate the main valve to turn off, then you can try turning on all the cold taps inside and outside the house to depressurise the pipework and minimise the leak.

Once you have stopped the leak from getting worse, give our emergency plumber a ring, any hour of the day or night. They’ll be there quickly to resolve the problem.

While waiting, remove any significant things from the area, and clean up any water or position a bucket to catch the drips. If you’ve turned the mains water off, switch off the heating for the hot water as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!
